Overview
Presented by the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), this course reviews clinically relevant topics in infectious diseases that are commonly seen in the inpatient and outpatient settings. It includes updates on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases with real-time information on key concepts needed to manage them.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice (IDCP) course is designed to educate and update primary care physicians, internists, hospitalists, family medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, advanced practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, clinical pharmacists, and other health professionals who diagnosis, manage, or treat infectious diseases in the inpatient or outpatient setting.
Objectives
Upon completion of the activity an attendee will be able to:
- Apply knowledge and principles to diagnose, manage, treat, and prevent common infections encountered in clinical practice such as skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, bone and joint infections, endocarditis, staphylococcal infections, nosocomial infections, sexually transmitted infections, and infections of the central nervous system.
- Identify the salient features of emerging and re-emerging infections such as avian influenza, measles, mpox, dengue, and others.
- Incorporate into practice the use of vaccines to prevent infectious diseases in adults and adolescents.
- Incorporate into practice the use of antimicrobial agents including (1) an understanding of their efficacy and (2) optimal use for prevention and treatment of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.
- Apply basic principles of antimicrobial stewardship to everyday clinical practice in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
- Incorporate into practice the diagnosis, management, treatment, and prevention of COVID-19.
- Identify and manage less common infections including infections in immunocompromised patients, mycobacterial infections including tuberculosis, and travel-associated infections.
